PM emphasises the need to fight climate change in an holistic way

A newly elected member of the upper house of Myanmar parliament Amyotha Hluttaw belonging to the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) from Shan State was shot dead on Saturday evening. The incident took place at his home in Kyaukme in Shan state of Myanmar.Two unidentified motorcycle borne gunmen attacked the newly elected parliamentarian Htike Zaw and fled. NLD spokesperson Myo Nunt told Reuters that the party has asked the authorities to investigate the incident as soon as possible. The party also denounced the post poll violence in Myanmar calling it bad for the future.

-Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasised  that climate change must be fought in an integrated, comprehensive and holistic way and not in silos. He said while all are focused on saving citizens and economies from the effects of the global pandemic it is also equally important to keep focus on fighting climate change. Speaking at the G-20 summit virtually, Modi said, India has adopted low-carbon and climate-resilient development practices.He said, India is not only meeting its Paris Agreement targets, but also exceeding them. Highlighting the efforts made by the government, the Prime Minister said, LED lights have been made popular, which saves 38 million tons of Carbon Dioxide emissions per year. He said, smoke free kitchens have been provided to over 80 million households through our Ujjwala Scheme which is among the largest clean energy drives globally.

-Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy R K Singh has said, India is going to replace the safeguard duty with the custom duty to protect the local manufacturers of solar equipment. He said, some countries are dumping solar equipment at very low prices in our country to destroy local manufacturers.The Minister said that the cost of solar power will come down in future with the increased efficiency of solar modules, cells and storage capacity. He said, this will help the consumer to a great extent by providing cheap electricity. 

-In the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the Border Security Force (BSF) troopers on Sunday discovered an underground tunnel on the international border at Regal area in Samba district.The underground tunnel was discovered by a patrol party and could have been used for infiltration from across the border. It is suspected that the four Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists who were killed in an Army operation on Thursday may have used this tunnel to sneak into this side of the border from Pakistan. The BSF officials said that a massive anti-tunnelling operation has been carried out along the International Border since Friday and Army and police have also joined the operation, which is still underway. The security forces had received information about the infiltration of four terrorists from across the international border in Samba sector.

-Britain and Canada struck a rollover trade deal to protect the flow of 27 billion dollar-worth of goods and services between them after Brexit. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson joined Canada’s Justin Trudeau and their respective trade ministers on an online call to mark the trade deal.The deal paves the way for a tailor-made agreement covering more areas such as digital trade, small businesses, the environment and women’s economic empowerment.In a statment, UK’s international trade secretary, said that the agreement underpins 20 billion pounds worth of trade and locks in certainty for thousands of jobs.Britain is Canada’s fifth largest trading partner after the United States, China, Mexico and Japan.
